I kind of touched on this topic on my local political blog but the shootings in Virgina have demonstrated how technology can be a comfort. Blogging about the events creates a situation where people can talk about it, being able to use a cell phone to make sure that a loved one is okay, or to find out information quickly if someone was injured.
