How to beat a backstabber at work

Interesting advice being given by "Annie" at CNN's Money in an article that gives advice on How to beat a backstabber at work.

I'm not the expert but I can't say I agree with part of the advice given, having a group meeting and talking about "proper communication channels" isn't going to stop backroom channel type gossip. Personally I'd meet with the person who was reported in saying the "backstabbing" type information in private and see if there was something that was bothering them that made them unhappy. Or it could turn out to not even be true, which many workplace rumors end up being, hence having a team meeting gives the impression that there is something to worry about.
