Trying to capitalize on a growing market of people wwith higher speed internet connections and their desire to watch movies now, from their homes rather than to go to the video store or wait for one of the services like Blockbuster or Netflix to deliver, comes this news from Wal-Mart:
BENTONVILLE, Ark. (AP) - Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) is edging into selling video downloads by offering buyers of the "Superman Returns" DVD a chance to buy downloads of the same movie, beginning Wednesday.
The world's largest retailer said Tuesday that shoppers have the choice of paying $1.97 to download the movie to a portable device, such as Apple's iPod or Microsoft's Zune, or paying $2.97 to download it to a laptop or desktop computer. For $3.97, customers can download the movie for both formats.
Personally I think the potential only exists if the buyer doesn't have to purchase the DVD too, but we'll have to watch to see if this ends up being "Super".
