Storm shutters...

One thing I've noticed in some of the recent movies we've watched is the use of exterior shutters being used to give an older abandoned home that even "creepier" feel with the storm shutters being shut and having broken slats. In this part of Northwestern Ohio, most of the exterior shutters that homes have are merely for decoration and are not full storm shutters that can actually be closed. Yet in other parts of the country, shutters that do actually "shut" are much more common place.

It's believed that they first were used in ancient Greece in order to provide light control, ventilation and protection from the heat and it is thought they were first created in stone with fixed louvers.
