While the media is reporting that the unemployment rate is 8.1 which is the highest it's been in 25 years, the reality is that number does not include a good number of people, it doesn't include those who are working part-time jobs, because they can't find full time employment; or who would like to be working but have given up finding employment. The number to look for whenever you read these articles out there about unemployment is the "labor underutilization rate" which for February is 14.8 percent.
That gives you a closer idea to what the "real" unemployment rate is, which is also of course up for debate since the samplings used have been questioned as far as their reliability. Most people are not aware that in 1994 the Bureau of Labor Statistics started tracking some of this information differently and thats when the "labor underutilization" numbers started being tracked.
