Depending on your situation, debt consolidation can sometimes help, but I really recommend looking at the terms of any debt consolidation loan and if that is something you are considering, if you are already behind enough to the point where it is affecting your credit rating, you might not be able to get as good of an interest rate.
When a debt consolidation loan is not possible, there are also consumer credit counseling organizations out there, some are non-profit, that you can also turn to. One thing I've learned, ignoring debt doesn't make it go away...
