In my area there has been a lot of discussion centered around some of the newer buildings being LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) qualified, one of the requirements of LEED's is related to water usage. Some of the same concepts used in these new buildings can be used by you at home and they don't have to be major overhauls. Items such as a Dual Flush Toilet conversion can be installed without having to purchase a new toilet.
When you stop and consider how much water you can save by using a low flow toilet it not only helps the environment by reducing the amount of water your household uses, but it helps you save on your water bill. It is this same LEED technology that has created this DIY project which one of the things I like most about it is the fact that it uses your existing toilets. Unless you really do have to do a complete replacement it doesn't make sense to have a working commode end up in the landfill.
If you want to learn even more? Dual Flush has a blog, that contains tips on how to save water and even the history of the toilet.
