Since we have been following the oil spill story here in detail, it seemed appropriate to point out this article in Time about the issue California faces -- turn abandoned oil rigs into reefs or demand they be dismantled.
What's interesting is the fact that the sea life has adapted to the existence of the oil rigs which means if they are dismantled then all of the sea creatures who have attached themselves to the rig or feed/breed/live around the rig would be killed/impacted by the removal of the rig.
There's also a cost factor and it's ironic that when California and other states allowed the rigs to exist off their coasts, no one planned for what should be done when that particular rig no longer served a purpose...
