Poverty rate jumped in 2009

On Thursday the Census Bureau released information that shows the poverty level rose by quite a bit in 2009. Forty-four million people in the United States, or one in seven residents, lived in poverty in 2009, an increase of 4 million from 2008.

The poverty rate climbed to 14.3 percent, the highest percentage since 1994. It was 13.2 percent in 2008. Children are impacted the most, one in five under 18 living below the poverty line.
