Peanuts 60th Anniversary...
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 2: "PEANUTS" 60TH ANNIVERSARY
Profile America -- Saturday, October 2nd. Some of the most enduring comic strip characters in history made their first appearance on this day 60 years ago -- Charlie Brown, Lucy, Linus, and of course, Snoopy. The strip was "Peanuts," drawn by Charles Schulz. With a sharp sense of humor and a keen understanding of alienation, Schulz created a set of children who told the truth -- sometimes with an edge to it. At the time, it was something different and immediately became popular, not only in the U.S. but in many foreign countries. Schulz died 10 years ago -- just hours before the final "Peanuts" strip appeared in Sunday papers around the world. Newspaper circulation peaked in 1990 and now stands at nearly 49 million daily readers. You can find these and more facts about America from the U.S. Census Bureau, online at www.census.gov.
