Once upon a time the use of 900 numbers was the latest trend in the pay per call industry and the reputation of it being only related to the adult entertainment industry also grew. There were quite a few other uses for this type of a call system but it had it's minuses, for some there was a longer pay out time since the call was actually billed to the person's phone and there were some times when the call was the result of misuse by a minor. I actually experienced that once when my son and his friends years ago had some fun with a 900 number.
Now there is a move away from the 900 Number system through companies like PayPerCall.Com who offer 800 numbers with direct credit card billing. They still offer 900 numbers for those customers who prefer that system but the 800 number system creates the potential for a faster payment process and since it using a credit card through a verified charging system, eliminates some of the problems experienced with 900 calls. Many different types of companies use these systems, from self help advice to employment services. From a marketing perspective, the use of an 800 number creates the potential of a more positive outcome.

PremiumTalk also allows something similar to this in that it allows you to charge a per minute rate for phone calls. They do not provide you with an 800 number but there is also no startup cost.
